<hi style=afpcap>The C-119 was produced as a tactical transport aircraft to ferry personnel and equipment within the theatre of operations. Several modification programmes were carried out to enable the type to perform specialist tasks, although none were as enterprising as that proposed by the Fairchild Hiller Corporation to fit four General Electric Suu-11 gun pods each containing a six-barrel 7.62 mm minigun along the port side of the fuselage. In addition the aircraft were equipped with an airborne illuminator light and a night observation system. These aircraft were designated the AC-119G, and were followed by the AC-119K version which featured the fitment of a pair of underwing J85 jet pods, as well as two Suu-16 20mm guns. The AC-119s served the USAF in Vietnam, although most were reassigned to the Republic of Vietnam Air Force with some eventually being captured by the North when they swept to victory in the South. </hi>
